Is My Mom Career Gap Holding Me Back?

I am a 39-yr-old mom who wants to work again. I have a career gap of 2 years because of being a stay at home mom. I am a programmer before becoming a mom. I want to transition to QA. I started applying for QA automation jobs 5 months ago however I keep getting rejected. I am not sure if it’s because of my career gap or because of my work experience.

Hello Lauren!

I love that you are ready to work again! It is so important to go for what you want, even amidst your new role as mama.

There honestly, is so many reasons why you might not be getting a call back. Your programming background may actually be an asset in QA automation, but your resume has to clearly show how your previous skills connect to the work you want to do next.

You may not be positioning your skills, knowledge, and abilities well in your resume as they relate to the job.

Do not automatically assume that your Mom Gap is the roadblock. It may be the way you are presenting that gap that may be holding you back. Your cover-letter is a great place to express what you were doing during that time.

Connect the dots for the hiring manager. Let them know why your past experience is a good fit and why you are the right person for the job.

You Got This!
